Yara International ASA (Norway) PDF Print E-mail
Yara is a global company active in industries ranging from food production to emissions control. We’re the world’s largest supplier of mineral fertilizers, the world’s largest supplier and trader of ammonia, and the global leader in a wide range of chemical products.

The History of Yara

The company’s development is rooted in that of Norwegian industrial firm Norsk Hydro, which dates back to 1905. That’s when industrialists Sam Eyde, Kristian Birkeland and Marcus Wallenberg tapped into Norway’s large hydro energy resources to produce the company’s first important product: Mineral fertilizer, which attracted attention from all over the world since it enabled farmers to boost their yields.

Decades later, after Norsk Hydro itself had expanded into a vast array of businesses from fertilizers to oil to metals, the division mostly devoted to agricultural products and co-products was spun off into its own stocklisted entity. Yara International ASA debuted on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 2004, but a lot happened in the intervening years and the company’s story continues…

Ammonia tank

We help boost food production and enable biomass growth to deliver renewable energy. Many of our industrial products safeguard air and water quality and preserve food quality. We can help cleanse the air and eliminate toxic waste by delivering new and innovative solutions for the control and capture of emissions.

We also nurture a culture that springs from our common knowledge and values. When knowledge grows, people grow.
Our business model and market segments:

Upstream

This segment includes Yara’s large-scale ammonia and fertilizer plants, the backbone of Yara’s production system, as well as the global trade of ammonia. Upstream has a strong and efficient manufacturing base with energy as a main raw material. Yara’s Upstream strength stems from its leading global position in ammonia, nitrate and NPK fertilizer production, its economies of scale, sourcing from low-cost natural gas regions and continuous focus on productivity improvements and simplification. Upstream plants have a global reach and all products are sold through the Industrial and Downstream segments.

Industrial

This segment creates value by developing and selling chemical products and industrial gases to non-fertilizer market segments. Nitrogen chemicals include ammonia-derived products supplied to European chemical majors as well as industrial explosives. Environmental applications are also seeing strong growth, driven by new legislation in industrialized countries. Industrial’s product portfolio also includes CO2 for the food and beverage industries.

Downstream

Downstream offers products and services to many different market segments, covering both commodity and high-value crop segments. The product portfolio is well-balanced with standard nitrogen products like urea and upgraded products like nitrates. Both the Industrial and Downstream segments provide additional and stable margins and help even out earnings cycles.
